Results of the Paternity Test

The paternity test based on DNA analysis is presently the most accurate method possible. Normally, the classic paternity test consists initially in the evaluation of a group of characteristics that constitute the genetic profile of the child and its mother.

All of the genetic characteristics of the child that are not present in the mother must perforce be inherited from the biological father. If the presumed father has these characteristics he is considered the biological father (attribution of paternity). If, on the other hand, the presumed father does not have these genetic characteristics, he is excluded as the biological father (exclusion of paternity).

In practice, if the genetic profile of the child and the father have two or more different genetic characteristics, EXCLUSION is certain (0% probability of being the biological father).

On the contrary, if the genetic profile of the child and the father concord for every genetic characteristic analyzed, an ATTRIBUTION of paternity is determined. In the latter case, a statistical analysis of the results is carried out and then a percent of attribution is furnished that will be approach 100% as the number of regions of DNA analyzed increases.

Our Center investigates from 9 to 15 DNA regions, reaching a percent of attribuion (probability of paternity) greater than 99.9999%. This probabilistic value indicates that the presumed father is, in practice, the biological father.

The final probability of paternity can never reach a mathematical value of 100%. In paternity verification, the mathematical value of 100% is not necessary: in fact, Italian law states that paternity is considered "almost certain" when the probability of paternity exceeds the value of 99.8%.
